My name is Oliver (Sonny) Shimaoka and I am a candidate for the County Council in the 9th district.
I am currently the Assisting Minister at New Hope Waimea Christian Fellowship. I received my ordination in 1997 from the International Church of the Foursquare Gospel headquartered in Los Angeles, California. I have been in the ministry for 27 years.
I am a veteran with the U.S. Army and served two tours as a combat infantryman in South Vietnam. After receiving an honorable discharge, I enrolled at Honolulu Community College and received an Associate Degree in Liberal Arts in 1975. I also attended the University of Hawaii at Manoa and majored in Secondary Education.
My wife's name is Sharon and we have been married for over 41 years. She works for the Department of Education and is currently a first grade teacher at Waimea Elementary school. We have four grown children – Kalei, Keiki, Nalani, Kamaha'o and six grandchildren.
I have served on several community boards over the years including the Neighborhood Place of Kona, Hospice of Kona, The Hokulia Foundation. I currently serve as a board member for the Native Hawaiian Health Clinic at North Hawaii Community Hospital.
I have also been serving as the police chaplain with our Hawaii County Police Department for over 25 years. Within the department, I have worked with their HiPal program providing assistance with sports programs, Community Policing initiatives as well as spiritual counseling with officers.
I was born and raised on the east side of the Big Island in Keaukaha. For the last 25 years, my family and I have lived on the west side of our island, Kona and now Waimea. I have seen the many changes take place throughout Hawaii County for the last 45 years. I am confident that I can serve my district and my island well because of my long history on Hawaii island. I believe that this history has provided me with the tools to address the issues and concerns of our residents.
Bringing people together to solve problems is one of my greatest passions. Over the years I have seen many people struggle to make it through life to just survive. I welcome the opportunity to make a difference not only for my district but for our island as a whole. I would be honored to represent the people of my district and my island as a member of the County Council.
